I know that you will likely never read this post, but I'm throwing this out there and sending a link to the NFL offices just in case. I also understand that you are a busy man with little time to respond to fan feedback. That being said, I would like to challenge you with an opportunity to do the right thing.
Yesterday, December 8th, Bengals Head Coach Marvin used the term "midget" as an insult against Johnny Manziel. Unbeknownst to Lewis, as well as to many NFL fans, this is an obscenely insulting term to "little people," as this group of people prefers to be called. It has been an insulting and obscene term since first used by PT Barnum in the 1800s.
Your tenure as NFL commissioner has had its share of both high points and low points. The lockout was a low point. The Ray Rice incident was a low point. That being said, better awareness for concussion issues and an increased sense of political correctness across the league are high points of your leadership. Under your tenure, Riley Cooper has come under scrutiny for using a racial slur, and there has been much discussion over changing the name of the Washington Redskins. These are good things and show that your office cares about doing the right thing.
So I implore you, Commissioner Goodell, to do the right thing in the Marvin Lewis "midget" case. I'm not necessarily asking for a suspension or even a fine, as this is a term most Americans do not even realize is offensive. I am asking for one simple thing, for the league to make a statement on the topic and issue an official apology. Failure to address this issue would signal a complete and total failure of leadership on your part.
Why? Because addressing the issue is the right thing to do. Not only would it go a long way to heal the divide created between the NFL and the people hurt by Coach Lewis' comments, but because it would also do much to raise awareness about a little-known issue in America. We can stand up for breast cancer. Let's take a stand for the little people too. Either stress political correctness for all, or willingly accept an identity as a hypocrite. Let's make the right choice.
Thank you for your time,
