2016 Senior Bowl Watch List.

11/3/2015

The 2016 Senior Bowl takes place on January 30th, 2016 in Mobile Alabama.  Every year, some of the top players in college football converge in Mobile to try to draw the attention of NFL scouts.  2016 is no different.  The watch list has been released for the Senior Bowl (this list is a list of all potential prospects for the game, not a final roster, which will be released later).  I'll list the players below, and add scouting reports daily.  It's never too soon to prepare for the draft. Here's the first "big board" for 2016! Enjoy! --Mike B.

Mehdi Abdesmad, DT, Boston College. When Abdesmad left high school, he was one of the top Canadian prospects from his draft class and used that to gain some leverage heading into college. His high school film  (here) shows some solid base pass-rushing skills. He carried those skills over as a player at Boston College, and while he's not getting a lot of attention by some scouting sites (NFL Draft Scout has him rated #48 out of 224 DTs),  but that has as much to do with an extensive injury history as with anything else.  He's got the raw talent to make an impact at least as a role player at the NFL level. He's a big boy at 6'6 (or 6'7 depending on who you ask) and 286 pounds, and his film shows a bit more of a pass rusher than a pure DT. He's a guy that could do well in a rotational role off the edge as an end as well as playing some as a DT. Slightly oversized to play OLB, but as a DE, he could make his biggest impact. Likely a late round pick at best, but could make a nice impact in the right scheme rotationally.

Jerell Adams, TE, South Carolina.  Adams is a classic case of potential versus production.  NFL Draft Scout has him rated as the #3 tight end in the 2016 class, and was viewed by some as a middle-round prospect.  However, he hasn't been able to turn his measurables into production and may be sliding into UDFA territory; over 8 games this season, Adams has managed only 16 receptions. The upside is there for Adams to be a weapon in the right offense, but he is still a couple of season away from truly arriving. He only started 6 games prior to his senior season, so he's lacking in experience. Scouts love his physical tools, but again, needs better numbers to really gain attention in the draft. He'll be a slight project player at the next level, but one with intriguing upside. His slow season could knock him down to the tail end of the draft, at which point, he's a worthwhile gamble. Here's a highlight. The tools are there. He just needs to grow into them, and could benefit from a redshirt year or two in the NFL.

Andrew Adams, S, Connecticut. Andrew Adams is a guy whos rating is a bit lower than it should be. He's ranked as the 12th best free safety in the 2015 class by NFL Draft Scout, but Adams is an integral part of the UConn defense, and he always seems to find the ball. I've watched a few UConn games this year and he's always near the football, even if he's not the guy making a play. Tony Pauline views him as a late round prospect who could, at worst, stick as a special teams player and in dime packages. I agree, and think that he could definitely improve given time.

Vernon Adams, Jr.  QB, Oregon. Vernon Adams is a guy that has generated some hype lately, but is ranked relatively low as far as quarterbacks in this class; NFL Draft Scout has him listed as the 16th QB in this class. He's a dual threat-type of quarterback who has a decent deep ball. He's small, fast, and reminds some scouts of guys like Johnny Manziel. Adams transferred from Eastern Washington, where he performed well as a player, and continued to perform well at Oregon. However, according to one Oregon assistant coach, Adams is "just a guy." The coach notes that Eastern Washington continued to put up solid production after Adams left. That being said, Adams stepped up from Division IA football to Division I football and continued to put up decent numbers. Here's some film. At the end of the day, Adams is a guy that has some decent upside, but more likely will max out as a backup in the NFL. He's a guy that could go near the end of the draft (or undrafted),and at that point he's worth a lottery ticket (as he could show up at the next level), but at the same time, he could also wind up on a practice squad. He's one of the more difficult prospects in this class to properly pin down for me, but I think his most likely career trajectory is a backup/practice squad type of role. I still peg Adams as a Big Sky Conference dual-threat type of guy that excells in that conference but tend to not catch on in the NFL (a good analogy is DeNarius McGhee from Montana State).  Adams' time at Oregon should at least get him a camp invite though, where he could carve out a role.
