The 2014 NFL regular season starts with a bang tonight with a juicy matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers. I feel like this is going to be a close matchup; if this game was in Lambeau I would be projecting Green Bay to win. My guess is the game will be lost by mental errors. The key player in this entire matchup is rookie center Corey Lindsey, making his first career start for the Packers. If he can withstand the noise in Seattle and limit his mistakes, Green Bay could win this game. If he struggles, it's going to be a long night.
Time for a quick look at the teams:
Running Back: Eddie Lacy and Marshawn Lynch are both solid running backs. However, Lynch is getting up there in years and is coming off off a holdout. I wonder if he'll look any slower tonight? Lacy, on the other hand, is a second year player with tons of potential for a breakout. I'm giving the edge to Lacy here.
Quarterback: Aaron Rodgers trumps Russell Wilson. Yes, Wilson had an outstanding preseason, but Rodgers is one of the best QBs in football every single season. Wilson is going to have a breakout year this year, but Rodgers is still the better QB.
Wide Receivers: Green Bay lost James Jones in the offseason, and Seattle lost Golden Tate. Tate is going to be a bigger loss for Seattle than Jones will be for Green Bay. Tonight, I feel like the WR corps are fairly evenly matched, but if (when) Percy Harvin goes down later in the season, Seattle will be in trouble. All in all, tonight the WRs here are fairly evenly matched.
Tight End: I have to give the edge to Seattle here given the uncertainty still swirling in Green Bay over who will step in to fill the Jermichael Finley role in this offense.
Offensive Line: again, edge goes to Seattle here. Corey Lindsey worries me tonight for Green Bay.
Defense: Seattle's defense lost some key players in Chris Clemons, Red Bryant, Clinton McDonald, Brandon Browner, and Walter Thurmond this offseason. Green Bay lost BJ Raji for the year due to injury, but they also signed Julius Peppers, so that takes the sting away a bit. Green Bay's defense will be better this year, and Seattle's defense will be at least slightly less formidable. There are a lot of question marks in the defensive matchup tonight. Both teams have the potential to still field solid, solid units, but this could also turn into a shootout.
Final score: Green Bay 27, Seattle 31. A few mental mistakes in key situations kill drives for the Packers giving Seattle an edge. However, I waffle a bit here. IF Green Bay can avoid mental mistakes tonight, they will win this game. Mark it down; you heard it here first.
